"I'm the Janitor. I clean up, do fixits. Whatever needs done."

— The Janitor

The Janitor is a mysterious character in Night in the Woods who appears several times throughout the game.

Appearance[]

The Janitor is a middle-aged, cyan-colored bird. He has a long, narrow beak and a short shaggy goatee. He wears a flannel shirt, jeans and heavy work boots, and carries several tools on his belt.

Background[]

The Janitor is the first character Mae is able to interact with in-game. He can be found repairing the door to the bus station where Mae has arrived. Not much is known about him other than he seems to be a general repairman and custodian. During the Harfest, he plays the role of the Forest God in the play.

Personality[]

While The Janitor appears quite mundane at first, he displays some mysterious mannerisms. He can seemingly disappear and hints at having access to preternatural knowledge. This can be observed as he knows Mae's name regardless of being told.

The Janitor speaks with a down-to-earth tone and often offers sage yet cryptic advice to Mae. During these conversations, he is quick to excuse himself by stating that more work needs to be done.

Trivia[]

  • He likes Fiascola, even going so far as to rig soda machines that carry it.
  • A statue in the cemetery bears the Janitor's silhouette except with a hat.
  • There is cut script that contains unfinished dialogue between Mae and the Janitor in the epilogue, in which Mae sees an "astral-god-looking bird" fly in-frame and then out of frame, which causes Mae to think the Janitor transformed into said bird. The Janitor then comes back on-screen, asking Mae if she saw the bird, laughs, and walks back off-screen. This appears to be a gag that seems to be poking fun at the Janitor's mysterious appearances throughout the game.[1]
  • He drills a hole onto the bottom of a Fiascola to drink.
