— Possum Springs slogan[1]
Possum Springs is the located setting of Night in the Woods. It is the town where protagonist Mae Borowski was born and raised, and where she returns to live with her parents after dropping out of college. Possum Springs, located in Deep Hollow County, is built on a flood plain in a valley surrounded by state forest.
History[]
Founding[]
Possum Springs was originally settled in 1793 by beaver fur trappers,[2] most notably Brothers John and Steven, who were attracted to the fresh springs from which the town bears its name. The town itself was officially founded in 1795.
Stafford Mine Explosion[]
In 1888, mine employees Addison Pine and Henry Harvey, 10 miles deep into the Stafford mine, set off explosions that unwittingly collapsed the mine and trapping those working in the area. This was due to pockets of gas in that section that the mine bosses were said to have been aware of, but chose not to inform Pine and Harvey of the danger. A total of 112 miners died in the incident and the last bodies were only recovered 2 days before the one year anniversary of the disaster.
Present[]
Possum Springs used to be a boomtown that underwent significant development due to a coal mining industry there. This is revealed as the game has multiple mentions of coal mining. In addition, the Trolley Tunnel has a large mural that depicts an old coal mine and four coal miners. However, Possum Springs started to stagnate when the coal mine was shut down. This caused the unemployment rate to skyrocket and for Possum Spring to start going under. For example, multiple buildings are closed such as the Food Donkey and characters express the stagnating state of the town. In addition, the town holds an annual Harvest Festival (colloquially called Harfest) in October. The townsfolk can be seen performing a play that chronicles the founding of Possum Springs.
