"It's a whole new world, sweetie."
- Candy at Mae
Candy Borowski is the mother of Mae Borowski the wife of Stan Borowski, and the sister of Molly. She currently lives in a house near the edge of Possum Springs, and works as the front desk receptionist at the The Church of the First Coalescence.
Appearance[]
Candy looks almost like Mae but older, she has dark blue fur with a patch of blue fur on the top of her head and red eyes. She wears a green coat with a light red shirt under it, turquoise pants and white shoes.
Personality[]
Candy is a sweet, kind-hearted individual, and a hard-working woman who helps take care of her family. She can be seen frequently reading dark and often creepy novels, a morbid interest she and her daughter often bond over.
She frequently worries about Mae's mental health, and can tell when her daughter's had a bad day. Despite her constant worry, she never pushes Mae too much, and usually knows when to accept her daughter's boundaries. It's clear that she has a lot of love for her family, respective of the hard times that they've all faced, and are currently facing.
However, like everyone, she has her bad days. She becomes tight-lipped and blunt when it comes to the Borowski's struggling financial situation, even taking out her stress on her daughter Mae.
Background[]
Candy Borowski grew up in Possum Springs, playing around Jenny's field at a young age. Never having gotten a higher level of schooling, she hopes to one day have a child who'll succeed in doing that.
At some point before the start of the game, Candy and Stan get married, and have their first and only daughter, Mae Borowski. Candy mentions in-game that she's had multiple miscarriages before giving birth to Mae, and refers to her daughter as a "miracle baby."
Candy has a job doing administrative work at the church. She had to take the job because the family went into deep debt and took a second mortgage in order to support Mae after the incident at the softball game 6 years prior to the events of Night in the Woods. With the stress of possibly losing the house, and with Mae's sudden college drop out, Candy's anger and stress rises, until one day it boils over. Mae and Candy have a heated conversation about the house, about money issues, and finally about Mae's decision to leave college. Mae's explanation only confuses and angers her mother more, and Candy coldly tells Mae how the Borowski's may lose their house soon, mocking her daughter's answer in the process. Mae retaliates by insinuating her Mother, and her family, are all failures, and leaves a hurt and confused Candy alone in the kitchen.
After the argument with her daughter, hard feelings last only a day. The next morning, Candy calls her over to "come say hello" and apologizes for how she spoke to Mae. Mae, in turn, apologizes, and the two have a somber and serious discussion regarding the families' bad financial situation.
If the player checks in on Candy Borowski every start of a new day, she will ask Mae to hang out with her at Jenny's Field. If you do decide to visit Jenny's Field with Candy, she and Mae will tease each other during the visit, with Candy complaining that Mae didn't fall into any sinkholes and that she guesses she'll have to keep her daughter. It's obvious, however, that Candy just wanted to spend quality time with Mae and share some memories. At the end of the day, Mae promises Candy that she'll spend more dinners at home; with her family.
Nearing the end of the game, Mae is found and rescued by Aunt Molly and her partner Dan from the cultists, and is brought to the church Candy works at. Candy and Stan stay by their daughters' side, worried and confused about who could do this to their daughter. She's eventually taken to the hospital, her parents by her side, until Mae wakes from her coma. After Mae awakens from her coma, she's taken home by her parents and made to stay inside and rest, but sneaks out of the house and goes to Gregg and Angus's apartment, where either Bea or Gregg can receive a call from a worried Candy, telling them to take care of her, and to bring her home come the morning.
At the end of the game, Candy can be seen where she usually is; reading a book in her kitchen, having the day off work much like her husband. She tells Mae to come home early for dinner, and Mae agrees, giving her mom a loving goodbye, off to band practice.
Relationships[]
Family
- Mae Borowski: Mae and Candy's relationship during the events of the game is a loving one and the two care for each other deeply. It is implied, however, that this wasn't always the case, and that the mother/daughter pair had a rocky relationship through Mae's teenaged years. This may have been due to the implied pressure that Candy placed on Mae with her insistence on Mae going to college.
- Stan Borowski: Candy and her husband are rarely seen interacting with one another during Night in the Woods as their work schedules don't line up. There is nothing to suggest that their marriage isn't currently healthy, though Mae (while drunk) reveals to Gregg and Angus that Stan had to stop drinking because he was a threat to his family.
- Molly: Candy has a good relationship with her sister and the two stay in contact with one another. Candy greatly respects Molly's determination as a policewoman. She wishes her daughter would respect Molly.
